The epic rivalry between the two footballing greats, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo graced the arabian soil on Thursday as the world got to witness their long lasting legacy probably for the last time.
After spending two decades in Europe and winning every trophy at club level, Ronaldo joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr, terminating his contract with Manchester United. His debut being delayed by two matches, following his FA ban, his first match was remarkably against his old rival.
Some reports suggest that Al-Nassr's all time rival Al-Hilal are trying to bring Lionel Messi to Saudi Arabia as his PSG contract is expiring at the end of the season. Saudi Arabia's Finance Minister recently opened up on signing the Argentine,"Well we talked about that before and the quality of life is critical part of the 2030 vision and quality of life in Saudi has improved, sports is significant part of that,"The young population of Saudi watch sports and perform sports and anything we can do to enhance this industry will pay back and improve the quality of life not only for our people but for the working people from outside".
The match ended in a nail biting note, followed by 9 goals and a red card before the half time whistle. Both Messi and Ronaldo were on the score sheet as the latter one scored a brace. In addition, the fans witnessed an epic game which ended 5-4 in favour of the French side as it was a reunion between the pair and all smiles after the final whistle. The first ever Messi-Ronaldo match was way back in 2008 when they faced each other in a Champions League clash which ended in a 0-0 draw. If Messi's move to Saudi is really happening, which looks a bit unlikely to happen, the old-age rivalry between the two will turn up into an Asian flair. Although it was an exhibition match between Riyadh All-Stars XI and Messi's Paris Saint-Germain, the old El Clasico memories were restored again.
WAS THIS THE LAST EVER MEETING BETWEEN THE TWO OR WILL THEY CROSS PATHS AGAIN IN A YET ANOTHER FANTASY?
